“并非所有精神病都在监狱里——有些就在董事会里。”这是罗伯特·黑尔在自己的演讲《我们之中的捕食者》中所说的名句。
精神病是“黑暗三性格”之一，其他两个分别是自恋癖与权术主义（又称马基雅维利主义）。值得注意的是，与临床表现的人格特征不同，人们普遍具有这样的性格。也就是说，你可能在心理测试中能得到很高、中等或偏低的分数，同时在日常生活中的表现很正常。
换句话说，你在心理测试中得分高，并不意味着你在生活或工作中有问题。尽管黑暗三性格有违反公共道德的意味，但近期的研究显示，拥有这些性格的人在职场上能获得各种各样的好处。
总体来说，精神不太正常的人比普通人更加不诚实、以自我为中心、鲁莽、冷酷。信奉权术主义的人更追求一种表面魅力，喜欢玩弄人际关系，欺骗别人，冷酷且容易冲动。具备这种性格的人缺乏道德观，很容易把“为达目的可以不择手段”或“要想成事就得投机取巧“的想法当做自己的座右铭。
而自恋癖则指的是一种不切实际的狂妄自大，一种膨胀的自负情绪（但往往是不稳定、不安全），同时伴以自私自利、不顾他人感受的行为。自恋癖又称那喀索斯主义，源自古希腊关于那喀索斯的神话，喻示着有自恋癖的人太过自大，可能会溺毙在自爱的情绪中——这使他们很难关注别人。自恋者往往魅力十足，而这种魅力是自恋者在社交上的优势：西尔维奥·贝卢斯科尼、吉姆·琼斯、史蒂夫·乔布斯都是这样的人。
在近期的一项有关典型德国企业的研究中，自恋癖与薪水呈正相关的关系，而权术主义则与领导层位置和职业满意度呈正相关的关系。在控制了人口统计、工作任期、机构规模以及工作时间的影响后，这种关联性依旧非常显著。
此前，一项耗时长达15年的研究发现，精神病态和有自恋癖倾向的人往往会升至机构的顶层阶级，取得更多财富。根据研究得出的此类发现以及一些人的预测，公司董事会成员临床诊断出心理疾病的概率是普通人的三倍。这也和早前人们总认为商人精神不正常的印象相一致。
哈维·克莱克里(Hervey Cleckley)1940年时在自己的代表作《圣洁的面具》（The Mask of Sanity）一书中指出，心理变态的商人工作效率极高，看起来也很正常，但他们每隔一段时间就会沉溺于“婚姻不忠、麻木不仁、酗酒、爱冒险”的窠臼。
那么为什么坏蛋总能得意呢？
一部分原因在于，除去黑暗面之外，这些人显然还有光明的一面。一项有关积极人格和消极人格重叠部分的研究发现，拥有黑暗性格特质的人更外向、对新事物抱有更开放的态度，更加好奇，自尊心更强。除此之外，由于拒绝合作和利己行为，黑暗三性格的特质能提高竞争力。
另外有研究表明，精神变态与具有权术主义倾向的人能够利用诱惑和威胁的手段吓退潜在的竞争对手，获得老板的青睐。这也解释了为什么拥有这些性格特质的人通常都是优秀的演员，并能在两性关系（短期）中如鱼得水。不过我们需要明白，这些人的成功往往以牺牲群体利益为代价。
虽然黑暗三性格有积极的一面——这也解释了为什么坏蛋总能得意，但他们的成功是以牺牲集体利益为代价。从进化论的角度来讲，黑暗三性格的特质里面包含了寄生的本质。以政治的眼光来看，大环境越肮脏、越污秽，这些具有寄生性格的人活得就越滋润。
不出所料，一系列研究都将黑暗三性格与更高端的恃强欺弱行为联系起来。除此之外，两项元分析研究显示，黑暗三性格与职场上的消极行为（偷窃、旷工、失误、破坏等等）有重要联系。
1951-2011年间所有出版的相关科学研究都得出了相似的分析结果，即权谋主义、自恋癖与精神变态均与消极工作行为、企业员工意识淡薄呈正相关。而权术主义、精神变态与实际工作表现呈负相关（与个人事业成功相反）。正如综述所言：“庞氏骗局、互联网诈骗、贪污、内部交易、腐败、渎职”都可以归因于黑暗三性格的特质。
但是常言道，凡事适度为妙（适度本身除外）。例如，研究表明适度的权术主义倾向预示着较高的团队责任感，这也许是因为奉行权术主义的人在政治上精明，擅长交际，总能力争上游。在另一项关于军事领导力的研究中，最好的领袖展现出了自恋癖积极的一面，同时抑制了其黑暗的一面：他们十分自负，自尊自强，但在实际操作和印象管理方面较弱。
人们也许会认为暗黑特质是一个被滥用的力量——这种特质相对来说有益于在短期内取得成功，但长此以往也许会导致问题，特别是当人们自己没有意识到的时候。也就是说，黑暗面是我们个性中的有毒资产。你可以将它们变为一种职业武器，但随着你一步步成功，你的团队、你的企业会越陷越深。
进一步讲，当首要目标是要确保一个团队或企业比竞争对手做得更好时，应该避免选择一个有黑暗特质的领导。个性是职场上的宝贵财富，但黑暗三性格只是更利于个人发展而非集体发展。
