网络时代造就了许多网络红人，也同样为这些网络红人创造了很多新的机会。资深记者Nellie Bowles采访了Youtube网络红人Michelle Phan，向大众讲述她华丽变身的故事。
不要低估 Youtube 化妆教程视频里的明星。Michelle Phan 在 Youtube 上的化妆视频已经有超过十亿的浏览量，她本人也有超过 7 百万的粉丝。她是女性化妆视频聚合平台Ipsy的创始人，并与 Endemol、L’ Oreal 合作推出自己的品牌。她也出了一本教更多人如何比其他人更会化妆的书。
27 岁的她最开始的时候和她的家人一度靠食品券生活，如今她已经拥有一家年销售额达 8400 万美元的公司。她有 70 万使用她 Glam Bags（一个 10 美元一个月的小袋化妆品样品业务）的用户。这个化妆品商业以它高额的利润而闻名。
Phan 表示：她第一次在其个人频道上传的视频是一段关于狗的视频。其实博客和 Youtube 为她带来了巨大的机会。
在 15 岁的时候，她开始写博客，描述她幻想的生活：拥有很多钱，并能够有很多时间去尝试各种不同的打扮和妆容。
2007年 的时候，Phan 依旧是一个服务员，因为没有任何销售经验，她甚至没有办法在一家美容专柜找到一个工作。但她并没有因此而放弃。
Youtube 在大学是一个最大的社区，在心情低落的时候，它让她感受拥有一个巨大的平台机会。她找到另一扇门，而这扇门就是一台笔记本电脑。
当时因为要回答博客上两个读者问到的化妆的问题，Phan 在 Youtube 上传了一个 7 分钟的化妆入门教程视频。
她回忆道：她以为除了那两个读者，没有人会看这个视频。但出乎意料的是，这个视频的点击量惊人的高。
从此她正式开始在 Youtube 上制作化妆视频教程。她的视频每周都有 40000 点击量，订阅的粉丝们希望从中学到如何把简单的眼线变成更复杂的，比如如何看起来向《Bad Romance》的 Lady Gaga，以及如何化妆做面膜还有各种护肤技巧，还有可以用在各种场景的妆容，比如毕业典礼可以如何装扮等。
2008年，兰蔻的首席执行官在 Google 上搜索兰蔻视频的时候发现弹出来一个 Phan 的视频教程。在那段视频里，她在狭窄的飞机上教她的粉丝如何化妆。
随即兰蔻与她联系，并且签下她作为品牌代言人。一开始，兰蔻想让她把那些不符合兰蔻标准的内容删掉。但 Phan 表示，人们是因为视频内容足够真实而喜欢她的。人们需要明白正是这份真实的连接使 Youtube 变得与众不同。
2011年 到 2012年，Phan 在 Youtube 上的人气大涨，2012年，她从 Youtube 上的视频教程得到启发，正式建立她的女性化妆视频聚合平台 Ipsy。
提高到公司现阶段的主要业 Glam Bags 时，她表示对于 10 美元每个月，你仍然会觉得很值得，因为你既可以得到你想要的东西又可以尝试新产品。
当被问及 Youtube 经济学时，Phan 说到：就像任何媒体一样，你可以有订阅量，但这不会为你带来任何实际的经济效益，你不得不找到赞助商和卖产品。
她也提到了传统和移动互联网模式的改变带来的影响，去年，有 60%的点击量是来自电脑，而现在 70%的都是来自手机。
2013年8月，Phan 与 L'Oreal 合作推出 EM Machelle Phan 化妆品系列，取名为 “我的映像”（“Reflection Of Me")。2014年，她又与 Endemol 公司达成合作，在美国建立 FAWM 女性电视频道，涉及女性美容、健康、产品、情感等内容。她也开始打造自己的音乐品牌，同时推出她第一本自传。
在Amazon的统计中，她的书在健康、美容门类的图书中销量排名第七。而她的 YouTube 频道登上在 “100 个新媒体红人榜”，排名 48。 今年，27 岁就拥有四家公司的 Phan 登上 2015年“福布斯 30 岁以下精英榜”，演绎了一个现代版灰姑娘的故事。
总的来看，Youtube 为 Phan 的成功创造了一个巨大的平台机会，让她积累了大量的粉丝支持，为后期创建公司培养了大量的基础用户；担任兰蔻的代言人为她扩大了知名度。
