1994年，女朋友哭着离开他。那时，他一无所有，月薪82元，没有房子，看不见未来。然而，21年之后，他却以16亿美元（102亿人民币）身价名列福布斯华人富豪榜203位，成为马云最信任的兄弟，阿里巴巴的18个创始人之一。他是马云最信任的人谢世煌，1970年7月出生于瑞安荆谷。“我小时候，家境贫困，父亲是铁匠，兄妹四人全靠父亲力气活来养活。在我心底，十分向往安定的城里生活。”
1985年，考上瑞安中学后，他每周带米和咸菜到学校。看到同学吃饼干，他的口水只能往肚子里咽。1992年，他从沈阳工业大学财务管理专业毕业，就职于中国空分设备公司，主要负责大型化工设备销售的结算。
1994年8月28日，这是一个让谢世煌难忘的日子。工作两年多的谢世煌，突然接到女友来电，电话那头女友的一句“我们分手吧！”让他顿感晴天霹雳。女友是他在沈阳工业大学的校友，比他低一届，是他的初恋。当时，谢世煌在杭州，而女友则在椒江。接到电话后，谢世煌再也坐不住，他急切地想知道原因。那时候，他月薪仅82元，而身边的钱又恰恰用光了，他着急地向同事借了50元钱，坐火车直奔椒江去找女友。
“那一天，天上下起特大暴雨，我从火车站下车后，淋雨跑去找她，见到她后，就说了一句话，‘你跟不跟我走？’”谢世煌回忆道。女友没有回答，一直在哭，但女友分手的心意显然已决。从椒江回来后，谢世煌病了，整整一个星期躺在病床上。虽然他认为单位很快就要分房，然而女友却把他的贫困当成分手理由。
他后来冷静地反思，或许女友的选择是对的，他那时真的是一无所有，收入微薄，没有房子，看不见未来。分手后，他的生活观念发生根本性变化。“从那以后，我希望自己投入更紧张、刺激的工作状态，平稳单调的生活从此远离。”
1995年4月27日，谢世煌凭着自己对电脑的兴趣、对IT行业的粗浅认识，应聘进入当时算是杭州信息产业前沿的杭州迪佛通信有限责任公司，负责对外投资业务，他也成了中国第一代网民。1996年，一个偶然机会，他听说了“中国黄页”。在后来与马云的几次接触中，他被马云的激情打动，直觉告诉他，马云是值得走近、追随的人。1997年，谢世煌在迪佛通信公司已算是高薪阶层，年薪4万多元。
当他听说马云要离开中国黄页，要带着一个团队到北京外经贸部发展时，他再也坐不住了。他决心辞职，跟马云一起走。1999年年初，马云决定离开外经贸部自己创业，他让大家花5分钟时间考虑，是愿意跟团队回杭州抑或留在北京。“我们团队全部选择回来，大家一起创业。”谢世煌说。
然而，创业初期困难显而易见。1999年9月10日，阿里巴巴正式成立后，“我跟马云一起外出‘打的’时，10元钱的富康和8元钱的夏利，远远看上两车很相似，开近一看，若是富康就装作没看见，只为节省两元钱。”
2000年，由于纳斯达克互联网泡沫，大批互联网公司倒闭。他们想把阿里巴巴打包成一个解决方案卖出去，当时带了几个人到上海，记得有几次，坐了近5小时的公交车从上海的淮海路赶到位于宝山区的客户那里，可没到5分钟就被打发走了。那时候，谢世煌的MSN上经常挂着一句话：月末到了，谁给我一万元，我愿意到淮海路去裸奔。那时，他真有这样冲动，因为公司如果再不赚钱后果不堪设想。
后来的故事，很多人都知道了。阿里从1年盈利1元钱，到1天盈利100万元元，到1天交税100万元，再到2006年11月阿里集团拆分B2B公司上市，到淘宝网2008年度1000亿元的交易额，再到2014年总成交额2.3万亿元。阿里巴巴的各项业务都取得巨大成功。
2012年2月，谢世煌40岁生日时，成为他的6周年的结婚纪念日。他妻子是大学老师，家有娇妻幼子，其乐融融。
2014年4月，谢世煌从阿里巴巴获得10亿美元的借款，收购华数传媒20%的股份。同月，谢世煌和马云以33亿元人民币获得中国最大金融软件公司恒生电子（HundsunTechnologies）20.6%的股份。
2015年，谢世煌已经不再是21年前那个被抛弃的男人，而是身价16亿美金的富豪，他是蚂蚁小微金融服务集团的股东，阿里的投资总经理，资深总监，产品开发部负责人。
