后来，刘强东这样被女友抛弃：
背负20多万元的债，刘强东不得不将创业梦想暂时搁置。毕业之后，他选择进入一家外资企业，并有意识地在轮岗过程中将公司电脑信息化、物流、采购上上下下摸了个遍。两年之后，外债还清了。1998年，刘强东离开外资企业再次创业。他给自己的公司起了一个时尚的名字“京东多媒体”，实际是在中关村站柜台卖电脑配件。
最初，刘强东既是老板又是员工，爱面子的他一直瞒着父母，说自己还在外企上班。直到2001年，母亲感觉不对劲，突然有一天打儿子电话，说自己已经到了北京西站，要他过来接，刘强东创业的事情才露了馅。看到刘强东创业，母亲很自责，认为自己没有教育好他。在她看来，一个人大的毕业生没有选择公务员、出国深造，也没有在外企内部向管理层攀升，反而成为一个卖光磁产品的“小贩”，是走下坡路，是在做错误的事情。母亲的态度让刘强东很痛苦，而这种痛苦不仅来自母亲，还来自刘强东的女友。
刘强东曾回忆，创业时女朋友很看不起他，当时正在读研的女朋友去柜台看他，时常问他三个问题：难道你一辈子就要这么生活下去吗？为什么我们不能一块出国呢？你为什么不能考研呢？女朋友的父母也坚决反对，认为刘强东没出息、“只认钱”，当“小贩”更是很耻辱，坚决反对女儿和刘强东来往，不能跟这么没有出息的人一起生活。
再后来，刘强东创业获得巨大成功，追到了奶茶妹妹。
根据最新的胡润富豪榜，刘强东如今身价已达445亿。
