他叫庞东升，1977年出生于浙江台州，毕业于宁波大学。1998年3月加入马云的中国黄页，如果要是一直跟随马云，估计现在身价也上亿。但是他看到了互联网行业的巨大机会，选择了创业；在24岁的时候，已经身价超过百万。他创办过两个有名的互联网公司：51社区，2345网址导航。
他在刚开始跟着马云做中国黄页的时，客户买个域名再做个网页就能卖1万多块钱，他在这个时候也积累了建站的相关经验，为以后的创业打下基础。刚开始创业的时候，就是做一些流量站，靠着广告获取了巨大的收入，但终究不是正规军。在2005年的时候，庞东升决定按照主流的模式玩创业；也就是高举高打，寻找风投。他在当时花98万人民币购得天价域名：51.com，在当时是创造记录的。一年年之后，公司获得了600万美金的风险投资，这在当时并不算得上大数字，但是毕竟公司获得了第一次风投，是公司得以前进的基础。
2007年，51社区的注册用户达到7000万，已经成为仅次于腾讯的第二大社交平台。但是，那个时候腾讯已经上市，并且羽翼丰满，想颠覆腾讯几乎是不可能的。而且这个时候腾讯在扩张，并没有给予51太多的重视。这个时候，51偷偷挖来了腾讯的15名员工，开始研发一款叫做彩虹qq的软件。其实，彩虹qq就是腾讯qq的外挂版本，它可以显示好友IP地址及是否为隐身状态的功能。它的体验要比原来的qq好得多，所以一经推出，这个软件获得了大量用户，明目张胆的抢qq用户，这个时候腾讯不能容忍了，小马哥愤怒了。
这个时候，腾讯开始对51发起进攻。现实一纸诉讼来起诉15名员工，又对原来的qq版本进行升级，直接屏蔽彩虹qq外挂，直接打的51毫无还手之力。虽然后来51继续推出了相关服务，但终究还是吸引不到用户。
据江湖传言：这个时候，幕后还有一人在操作，就是大名鼎鼎的史玉柱先生。因为当时腾讯已经推出了游戏平台，并且取得了飞速发展，对巨人的网络游戏冲击很大，如果51能在这个时候偷袭腾讯成功，那么巨人在进一步整合51资源，有可能成为现在的腾讯，社交+游戏。恩，当时史玉柱投了5100万美金给51。可惜夭折腹中。
庞东升还是2345创始人，这个网站是国内第三大网址导航网站，26.5亿卖给一家上市公司。他还向母校捐款3000万,这绝对是一个大手笔。
