学词根，记单词（六）

prince 王子

prince最初的意思是领导一个国家的国王，直到15世纪，才演变成国王的儿子的含义，即“王子”。prince中的pri的意思是“第一”，即在一国中地位最高、排位最靠前的人，在过去就是“国王”的意思。principle是与prince相似的一个词，是由pri变形成prin加表示“抓住”的前缀cip和名词后缀le，组合而成的单词，意为人在生活中应该遵守的道德标准，即“原则”。把principle后面的le换成al，变形成principal，做形容词，意为“主要的”；做名词时则表示学校中位置最高的人，即“校长”。pri派生出prior，表示比最前面者还要优先放置好，“先前的”；后面加名词后缀ity组成名词priority，意为最先得到的，“优先事项、优先权”。

pri派生变形而产生出单词prime，因为是最初的，所以表示最高、最出众的，“最高的”；后面加ary，组成primary，表示“第一的、主要的”。由primary产生出单词

premier，意思与prime相同，都表示“最高的、第一的”。mini和master合成单词

minister，表示“长官”，前面加上prime，prime minister表示长官中位置最高的“国务总理”或“首相”。primitive最初是名词，表示最先出生的始祖或先祖，现在则用做形容词，表示像最初那样不发达的，“原始的、未开化的”。

说说“raise”和“rise”（上）

英语单词“raise”和“rise”仅一“a”之差，看起来非常相似，且两者均可以做动词或名词，含义都挺多且都有“增加、提高；升起”等含义。

总体上看，两者区别在于raise一般用作及物动词（transitive verb）后面直接加宾语，而rise则通常用作不及物动词（intransitive verb）后面加副词、介词+宾语/补语、或单独使用来构成一个完整的句子结构。

下面举几个例子，方便大家理解两者做动词时用法的不同：

1.The country's GDP rose by （增加）3% last year.

The supermarket has recently raised the price(提高价格) of pineapples.
