如果歪果仁问你：“What's your pet name？”你告诉他的是你的狗狗，猫咪或者其他宠物的名字，那就搞笑了。pet name在这里不是表示宠物名字，而是昵称的意思。Collins Dictionary（柯林斯词典）对它的英文解释是：A pet name is a special name that you use for a close friend or a member of your family instead of using their real name（昵称是用于亲密的朋友或家人之间代替真名的一个特殊名字）.其他词典的解释大同小异，基本都是“小名，爱称或昵称 ”的意思。它表示关系的亲近。
比如：
He addressed her by her pet name.
他用她的昵称称呼她。
Teddy was her pet name for him.
Teddy是她给他起的爱称。
